5 Winter Themed Children's Books

Hey everyone! With winter quickly approaching I have been on the search for my 5 favorite children's books to read during the winter. After looking around all my favorite book stores, and reading reviews online I have found my top 5. The books I have chosen are great to read out loud to your students, display in your library center or for small group instruction.

1. The Biggest Snowman Ever by Steven Kroll

When the mayor of Mouseville announces the town snowman contest, Clayton and Desmond claim that they will each make the biggest snowman ever. But building a huge snowman alone is hard! They work and work, but their snowmen just aren't big enough. Soon they have an idea. As the day of the contest approaches, Clayton and Desmond join forces to build the biggest snowman ever. This story is a great tool to teach your students about teamwork!

2. The Mitten by Jan Brett
When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing. One by one, woodland animals find it and crawl in; first, a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse and what happens next makes for a wonderfully funny story. This was one of my favorite stories to read as a child and I know your students will think it is just as hilarious as I did.

3. Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright

Sneezy the Snowman is cold, cold, cold. To warm up, he drinks cocoa, sits in a hot tub, stands near a warm fire–and melts! But the children know just what to do to build him up again–and make him feel just right. This is another funny classic story to share with your students!

4. A Loud Winter's Nap by Katy Hudson

Every year Tortoise sleeps through winter. He assumes he isn’t missing much. However, his friends are determined to prove otherwise! Will Tortoise sleep through another winter, or will his friends convince him to stay awake and experience the frosty fun of winter? This is a cute story that can teach you all about how powerful friendship is!

5. Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester

Tacky's perfect friends find him annoying until his odd behavior saves the day. This story is perfect for teaching your students all about being true to who they are. Being different and unique comes with its own rewards and your students will fall in love with this book!

I hope you all enjoy checking these books out and you all love them as much as I do! Happy December!!
